WKU SGA continues scholarship support for Study Away students

The WKU Student Government Association (SGA) will offer scholarships to Study Away students during winter and spring 2014.

Geographic Exploration of Hawaii will be among the Study Away courses offered during Winter Term 2014.

SGA first began offering this scholarship to students taking a Study Away course during Winter Term 2011. Since then, SGA has sponsored more than 30 scholarships, totaling more than $4,000.

Study Away offers off-campus courses that enable students to apply the lessons learned in the classroom in a practical, hands-on setting. No passport is required for Study Away courses since they take place within the United States.

SGA Academic Affairs Chair Megan Skaggs said this scholarship is a great way for SGA to support the development of students.

“WKU Study Away programs offer students a myriad of ways to create incredible experiences and lifelong memories,” Skaggs said. “As such, we highly encourage students to explore what opportunities the Study Away office can provide for them. Simply looking into these various possibilities could lead to an enriching experience unattainable anywhere else.”

Study Away Director Jerry Barnaby said these scholarships make an impact on students. “Scholarships like these give students additional resources to participate in Study Away programs, expanding their overall academic experience,” Barnaby said. “I hope other campus organizations will follow SGA’s lead and sponsor additional scholarship opportunities.”

Priority deadline is Oct. 31. Applications for winter and spring 2014 are available online at www.wku.edu/studyaway/scholarships2014/. Students do not have to be currently enrolled in a Study Away course to apply, but the award will only be made after the student has registered for the course.
