Preston Center celebration May 3; other dedications, special events coming up

WKU will celebrate the expansion and renovation of the Raymond B. Preston Health and Activities Center during a ceremony Monday afternoon (May 3).

The event will begin at 3 p.m. in the Preston Center’s fitness center. Speakers include WKU President Gary Ransdell; Steve Rey, director of Intramural-Recreational Sports; Howard Bailey, vice president of Student Affairs; Kevin Smiley, Student Government Association president; and Todd Misener, assistant director of Health and Fitness. Kent Preston, representing the Preston Family Foundation, will attend.

The $10 million project that included renovations to the Preston Center and the addition of a 14,000-square-foot fitness center was completed this spring.

Renovations included upgrades to all mechanical, electrical and technological operating systems; upgrades to lights, sound and security systems; improvements of the natatorium, locker rooms, health and fitness lab, Intramural-Recreational Sports administrative offices, multipurpose room and dance studio; and new carpeting, painting, furniture, landscaping.

The project included sustainability features in plumbing, lighting, air handling systems, windows and recycling units/containers. In the future, the center plans to turn exercise into electricity by retrofitting all fitness machines with ReRev equipment.

The Preston Center was built in 1992.
