#ThrowbackWKU: Dr. Frank T. Etscorn III

We’re teaming up with WKU Alumni Association for this #ThrowbackWKU to remember one of our great alums!

Dr. Frank T. Etscorn III

Dr. Frank T. Etscorn III (’71, ’73) is the first patent holder for the nicotine patch to help cigarette smokers break the smoking habit. Etscorn, a retired Dean and behavioral psychologist at New Mexico Tech, specialized in studying nausea. He created the original nicotine patch in the early 1980s after he accidentally splashed liquid nicotine onto his arm while conducting research in his lab. It quickly made him nauseous, and he realized that a patch could be used to deliver nicotine through the skin to help smokers quit the habit. He secured the first U.S. patent for the patch, which was noted as one of the best products of 1992 by Time and Fortune magazines. He was inducted into WKU’s Hall of Distinguished Alumni in 1993.
