The Special Collections Department of WKU Libraries is hosting a program presented by Nancy Richey, associate professor in Library Special Collections, about her latest book Mose Rager: Kentucky’s Incomparable Guitar Master at 6 p.m. Oct. 11 in the Kentucky Building at WKU. As part of the program, guitarist Robbie Jones will be featured and demonstrating the thumb-picking style known and created by the late Mose Rager himself.

Mose Rager book coverRichey co-authored the book with the late Carlton Jackson, distinguished professor at WKU and author of numerous books. “For the many who never met this gracious, talented man, this book will provide a great opportunity to get to know Mose Rager on a more personal level… you will see what a wide path that Mose opened as he traveled down the road of life with a thumbpick stuck on his right thumb,” said Eddie Pennington, guitarist, 2001 National Heritage Fellow, National Endowment for the Arts.

Acclaim Press, publisher of the book, states there are many country guitar legends, Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, Eddie Pennington, to name a few, who trace the roots of their music to Mose Rager of Muhlenberg County, Kentucky (home of the Everly Brothers). Richey will discuss his unique thumb-picking style and other facets of his life that led him to be remembered by many gifted musicians in the country music world.

“This is for anyone who appreciates the ‘Muhlenberg Sound’ and wants to know more about its history,” Richey said.

WKU Owensboro presentation: Richey also will present a program about the book Oct. 17 at WKU Owensboro. The presentation, featuring guitarist Alonzo Pennington, will begin at 7 p.m. in the Badgett Conference Room.
