Book Fest partners select ‘Serafina and the Black Cloak’ for fall 2016 community reading program; author Robert Beatty to visit Oct. 20
While in previous years, SOKY Reads! has focused on a work of fiction for adult audiences, this year’s pick is a popular middle grades book for anyone age 8 and up. Serafina and the Black Cloak, Robert Beatty’s debut novel, is this year’s choice, and copies of the book have been distributed to half a dozen schools, along with the Warren County Juvenile Detention Center and book clubs in the area who participate through the Warren County Public Library.
The novel, which won the 2016 Pat Conroy Southern Book Prize for representing “the best in Southern Literature,” is set at Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, and features the brave heroine Serafina on a thrilling adventure as she faces the evil Man in the Black Cloak and unravels her own mysterious past. The book was voted one of the top Middle Grade Books for 2015 by Goodreads.com, and was on the New York Times Best Seller list for over 25 weeks.
Kirkus Reviews says of Serafina, “Adults and children will eagerly follow Serafina…into a world of self-discovery, justice, and new friendships.”
According to WKU Libraries Literary Outreach Coordinator Sara Volpi, free book giveaways of Serafina and the Black Cloak will be held at the Bob Kirby, Graham Drive and Smiths Grove Branches of the Warren County Public Library at 1 p.m. Sept. 10; at the Warren County Public Library Main Branch at 2 p.m. Sept. 17; and at the Community Farmer’s Market from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 24.
Beatty will be reading from Serafina and signing books at the Warren County Public Library Bob Kirby Branch at 6 p.m. Oct. 20; the event is free and open to the public. Copies of Serafina and the Black Cloak and its sequel, Serafina and the Twisted Staff, will be available for purchase.
