2016 convocation: Faculty, staff awards presented

The annual faculty and staff awards were presented Friday morning at WKU’s 2016 opening convocation.

Jeff “Smitty” Smith, Van Meter Hall’s technical director/AV coordinator for Campus and Community Events, received the 15th Spirit of Western Award, which recognizes an individual who represents WKU in a distinguished manner and dedicates his or her career with passion consistent with the vision, mission and spirit of the University. Smith is “the heart of productions in Van Meter Auditorium,” Provost David Lee said. “His lighting designs, sound operation and recording skills truly enhance all who grace Van Meter’s stage. He pours his heart into all productions – big and small.”

President’s Award for Sustainability

Dr. Albert Meier, professor in the Department of Biology, was recognized as the recipient of the sixth annual President’s Award for Sustainability. Dr. Meier is on sabbatical; the award was accepted by Sustainability Coordinator Christian Ryan. The award honors individuals who exhibit excellence in supporting WKU’s commitment to sustainability by demonstrating exemplary practices and sharing solutions, incorporating sustainability into existing programs, and implementing innovative ideas.

University Faculty Award recipients were: Dr. Audrey Anton, assistant professor in the Department of Philosophy and Religion, University Award for Teaching; Dr. Timothy Rich, assistant professor in the Department of Political Science, University Award for Research and Creativity; Dr. Patricia Minter, associate professor in the Department of History, University Award for Public Service; Dr. David LeNoir, professor in the Department of English, University Award for Student Advisement; and Laura Houchens, English instructor and co-coordinator of the Student Tutoring and Resource Team (START) Center at WKU Glasgow, University Part-Time Faculty Award.

Tom Richmond

University Distinguished Professors appointed for the 2016-17 academic year are: Betsy Shoenfelt, professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences, and Tom Richmond, professor in the Department of Mathematics. The University Distinguished Professorship program is designed to recognize faculty members who have served the University with distinction and have compiled an outstanding record of achievement in teaching, research and service.
