Classes for the fall 2016 semester at WKU begin Aug. 22.
Here are some key events and reminders:
Class of 2020 arrives Aug. 13-14 for M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan
First-year students in WKU’s Class of 2020 will begin arriving Aug. 13 for M.A.S.T.E.R. (Making Academic and Social Transitions Educationally Rewarding) Plan activities. (Check out the list of move-in times for residence halls.) M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan events begin Aug. 14 and continue through Aug. 18.
The M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan schedule features educational workshops and informational sessions as well as numerous other activities including Opening Ceremony, Class of 2020 photo, CloseUp Theatre Troupe performance, WK&U street festival, Big Red’s Blitz community service event, Campus and Community Involvement Fair and TopperU Closing Ceremony.
M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan for Commuter Students Aug. 14-15
M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan for Commuter Students will begin at 5 p.m. Aug. 14 at Downing Student Union. The event is designed to provide the information first-year commuter students need to help make their WKU experience as successful as possible. Commuter students will participate in the M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan Opening Ceremony at 8 p.m. at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium. M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan educational sessions for first-year commuter students will be held Aug. 15.
President will welcome students, other groups to WKU
In addition to welcoming the Class of 2020 during a Meet and Greet for students and parents at noon Aug. 14 and during the M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan Convocation at 8 p.m. Aug. 14, WKU President Gary Ransdell will welcome Gatton Academy first-year students at 7 p.m. Aug. 15; WKU Forensics team at 9 a.m. Aug. 16; new WKU faculty members at 7 p.m. Aug. 16; first-year international students at 5 p.m. Aug. 17; WKU student-athletes at 4 p.m. Aug. 21; Kelly Autism Program students at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 21; Honors College students at 7 p.m. Aug. 22; and Confucius Institute Chinese teachers at 5 p.m. Aug. 23.
WKU Owensboro Student Orientation Aug. 16
Student orientation sessions for WKU Owensboro students will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 16 at the WKU Owensboro campus. Students are encouraged to attend one of the two sessions. These orientation sessions introduce resources and opportunities available to students on the WKU Owensboro campus.
Residence halls open Aug. 18
Topper Orientation Program Aug. 11 & Aug. 18-19
TOP (new student orientation) sessions for fall 2016 will be conducted Aug. 11 and Aug. 18-19 at Downing Student Union.
Graduate student orientation and reception Aug. 18
The WKU Graduate School will host graduate student orientation program from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 18 at Mass Media and Technology Hall Auditorium followed by a welcome reception for graduate students at 6 p.m. at the Augenstein Alumni Center.
President’s Opening Convocation Aug. 19
The President’s Opening Convocation for faculty and staff will begin at 8 a.m. Aug. 19 at Van Meter Hall.
Gathering on the Hill Aug. 19
Following the convocation, WKU Regional Campuses will host a meet and greet at WKU’s Faculty House. Remarks will begin at 10 a.m.
Student Organization Fair Aug. 24
WKU Student Activities will host DISCOVERfest, the fall 2016 student organization fair, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 24 in Centennial Mall. (Rain location is Downing Student Union, third floor.)
Welcome Back WKU Festival Aug. 31
The annual event, hosted by the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce, will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 31 on the WKU South Lawn.
International Year of South Korea
WKU will celebrate its International Year of South Korea during the 2016-17 academic year. ASPECTS, an exhibit of Works by Korean Artists in America and New Media Art by Korean Artists, will open Aug. 22 at the Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center Gallery. WKU Football season opener Sept. 1
The Hilltoppers open the 2016 football season against Conference USA opponent Rice at 7 p.m. Sept. 1 at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium. The Thursday night game will be televised nationally by CBS Sports Network.
Veterans Upward Bound accepting students
Attention U.S. Military Veterans, Guardsmen and Reservists: Veterans Upward Bound at WKU is accepting new students for the fall 2016 semester. This free program includes refresher classes, financial aid advising, gas stipends, scholarships and more. To learn more, call (270) 745-5008.
