Lt. Gov. Jenean Hampton will be the keynote speaker for the Western Kentucky Regional Women Veterans Conference on April 30 at WKU’s Knicely Conference Center.

Hampton, a Bowling Green resident, served in the U.S. Air Force for seven years. She is a combat veteran of the Persian Gulf War who rose to the rank of captain before leaving the military.

The conference theme is “Kentucky Women Veterans: Today’s Leaders.” The conference will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration is free but pre-registration is required online at http://veterans.ky.gov/Pages/Register-for-Western-KY-Women-Veterans-Conference.aspx.

The Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs is sponsoring the event, which is being overseen by KDVA Women Veterans Coordinator LuWanda Knuckles. “As with all of our events, women veterans from all across the Commonwealth are invited to attend any and every event hosted by KDVA,” Knuckles said. “We are excited to host outreach opportunities to bring services, information and programs closer to women veterans in their communities.”

WKU will be well represented at the conference. WKU Veterans Upward Bound Coordinator/Counselor Rick Wright will present a workshop on educational opportunities for veterans. VUB employees will also staff an information table. The WKU Army ROTC Color Guard will present and retire the American flag before and after the conference. In addition to Wright’s workshop on education, other presenters will offer sessions covering employment, benefits and entrepreneurship.

“WKU is the perfect place for a conference like this,” Wright said. “We have over 2,000 student veterans on campus and more than 20,000 veterans in southcentral Kentucky. It is an honor for us to serve our sisters-in-arms whenever we can.”

Vendors from several organizations will be distributing products and information that is of interest to women veterans and door prizes will be given away. There will be lots of networking opportunities and a complimentary buffet luncheon. Entertainment will be provided by the Looking For Lilith Theater Company.
