Hardin, co-editors honored for Kentucky African American Encyclopedia

The Kentucky State Historical Records Advisory Board has honored the three co-editors, including WKU History Professor John Hardin, for their work on the Kentucky African American Encyclopedia.

kaaecoverDr. Hardin, Dr. Karen Cotton McDaniel of Eastern Kentucky University and Dr. Gerald L. Smith of the University of Kentucky were selected to receive a 2015 Kentucky Archives Month Certificate of Merit for Writing/Publication.

“The seminal work is a wonderful reference tool that will be valued by all who use it,” Valerie Edgeworth, chair of the Kentucky Archives Month Coordinating Committee wrote. “Your use of Kentucky’s rich archival collections to discover more about the individuals highlighted in the encyclopedia is a great example of using primary sources to unearth untold stories.”

Dr. Hardin said the Kentucky State Historical Records Advisory Board is the second organization “to recognize as valuable the Encyclopedia’s comprehensive overview of African American contributions to the history and culture of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. On behalf of the three general co-editors and the 150 plus authors, we truly appreciate this award from professional librarians and archivists.”

The award will be presented in October, which is Kentucky Archives Month.

  • Upcoming event: Dr. Hardin will discuss the book as part of the Kentucky Live Series at 7 p.m. Oct. 8 at Barnes & Noble, 1680 Campbell Lane.
