Event will include official reading of governor’s proclamation declaring Sept. 13-19 as ‘Lifelong Learning Week’ in Kentucky
The Society for Lifelong Learning (SLL) at WKU will kick off its fall term with an Open House and Annual Meeting from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 30 at the Knicely Conference Center. An official reading of a proclamation by Gov. Steve Beshear will also be presented, declaring Sept. 13-19 “Lifelong Learning Week” in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
“This is an exciting time for the Society for Lifelong Learning at WKU,” said Dr. Linda Vitale, Advisory Board chair. “We are growing quickly and adding new unique learning experiences for adults throughout our community who have a passion for knowledge and enjoy sharing it with others.”
Vitale said that the Governor’s Proclamation of Lifelong Learning Week makes it even more exciting for the SLL.
“We encourage adults to pursue their passion for learning throughout their lifetime. Governor Beshear’s Proclamation helps us celebrate and promote the value of lifelong learning to people throughout this great Commonwealth.”
In its first term, the organization enrolled more than 100 members in 25 courses and events. The upcoming fall term will feature 20 courses, as well as a variety of Food for Thought events, including discussions on the International Year of South Africa, micro brewing and football & religion in the South, as well as a presentation from Don McGuire from the famed quartet “The Hilltoppers.” The open house and Food for Thought events are open to the public.
During the Aug. 30 open house, attendees will learn more about the SLL, speak with SLL members and representatives, receive a copy of the fall course catalog, get assistance with registering for classes, enjoy coffee and desserts and attend the first SLL Annual Meeting. The proclamation will be read at 3 p.m. during the meeting in the Knicely Center Auditorium. All SLL members and the general public are invited to attend.
