The scholarship is awarded to a deserving WKU student who is majoring in Health Information Management and first preference is given to Grayson County residents.

Marcia Rose was born on Aug. 26, 1957, to Kent and Elizabeth Renfrow Rose. A Grayson County native, she spent most of her life in the community and was the first person in her extended family to attend college, earning an associate degree in medical records technology from WKU in 1978. After her career as a student at WKU, Marcia began her medical career at Grayson County Hospital and later moved into Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center when it was created in Leitchfield. She remained at the hospital for 36 years, serving as Director of Health Information and later as Director of Coding.

Marcia was active in her community, serving as a member of the WKU HIM (Health Information Management) Program Advisory Committee; RVHIMA (River Valley Health Information Management Association) and the Little Church. She was married to Howard Shartzer with whom she had a daughter, Brandy, who died at birth. Marcia also helped raise her four stepchildren on a small farm in Grayson County. After a long battle with cancer, Marcia died on Nov. 21, 2014, at home under hospice care.

Thanks to the generosity of her parents and brother, Marcia will continue to touch lives and perpetuate her admirable legacy by enabling students to reach their educational goals through the establishment of this scholarship fund.
