The Kentucky Travel Industry Association (KTIA) has selected the 17th Annual Southern Kentucky Book Festival as one of its 2015 Spring Top 10 Festivals & Events. This is the third straight year that the festival has been given this recognition.
A panel of impartial judges selects the KTIA Top 10 Festivals & Events for each season. Criteria for selection include popularity of the event, its impact on the local tourism economy, plus cultural and historical significance. KTIA is a 930-member statewide association representing all sectors of the state’s tourism and travel industry.
“We were very happy to hear the news from the Bowling Green Area Convention & Visitors Bureau,” said Kristie Lowry, Literary Outreach Coordinator for WKU Libraries and Coordinator of the SOKY Book Fest. “SOKY Book Fest’s reach has expanded over the years and we are now attracting visitors to Bowling Green from across the nation.”
Held Friday and Saturday (April 17-18) in Bowling Green at the Knicely Conference Center, the SOKY Book Fest is a celebration of the love of reading that features over 150 adult and children’s authors and illustrators. This year’s headliner is Diana Gabaldon, the New York Times bestselling author of the Outlander series on which the STARZ television series of the same name is based.
Friday is Children’s Day, where a thousand students grades K-12 get the chance to meet their favorite authors, participate in interactive presentations, and use their imaginations in a creative make-and-do area. High school students will also have the opportunity to learn about the craft of writing from young adult authors who will be at the festival on Friday, and adult writers of all skill levels can attend 75-minute sessions presented by famous authors as part of the Kentucky Writers Conference.
Authors are available to meet the public and autograph their books on Friday and Saturday. All books signed must first be purchased at the book festival. No outside items may be brought to the event for signature. For information on the SOKY Book Fest, call (270) 745-4502 or visit www.sokybookfest.org.
