Geoscience graduate student awarded scholarship for George Wright Society conference

Collins Eke of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, a WKU Geoscience graduate student specializing in cultural geography, has been awarded a George Melendez Wright Student Travel Scholarship. The competitive award provides financial assistance to attend the 2015 George Wright Society Conference on Parks March 29-April 3 in Oakland, California, and a weeklong mentoring opportunity with park professionals intended to enhance interest in the conservation and preservation of parks, protected areas and cultural sites throughout the world.

Eke and his advisor, Dr. Katie Algeo, will be co-presenting research about Mammoth Cave National Park at the conference in a paper titled Where Did All the People Go? Using Census Data to Track Out-Migration during Park Creation. The goal of their research is to contribute to a greater understanding of the park creation dynamic as experienced by those most closely and directly affected.

The George Melendez Wright Student Travel Scholarship program encourages minority students from diverse ethnic, racial and cultural backgrounds to participate in the Society’s biennial conferences and enhance their interest in the conservation and preservation of parks, protected areas and cultural sites throughout the world. The GWS seeks to encourage scholarship winners to pursue a profession in fields directly related to parks, protected areas and cultural sites by giving them the opportunity to participate in a professional conference in all its dimensions, whether by taking part in sessions or networking with peers. The scholarship consists of a registration fee waiver, a complimentary membership in the George Wright Society for 2015, and, generally, a travel stipend of $1,000.
