A WKU alumnus is returning to the Hill to lead the world-champion forensics program.
Ganer Lee Newman IV will become Director of Forensics on Aug. 11. Newman returns to WKU from Illinois State University where he is Director of Individual Events for the ISU Forensics Union and a lecturer in ISU’s School of Communication.
Since Newman joined ISU in 2013, the team has risen competitively at the American Forensics Association National Individual Events Tournament from a ninth place finish to fourth and improved performance from every returning team member.
“I am delighted that Ganer has accepted my offer to come back to the Hill,” Gordon Emslie, WKU’s Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, said. “With his proven leadership skills and resourcefulness, I am confident that WKU Forensics will sustain its long-standing world-leading position.”
In addition to earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees from WKU, Newman has served as an assistant coach and graduate assistant coach for WKU Forensics. He has also been the Director of Interpretation for the Florida Forensic Institute, one of the largest and most successful comprehensive summer programs for speech and debate in the country.
“I am thrilled to be returning home to the Hill to continue the University’s legacy of excellence in forensics,” Newman said. “The WKU community uniquely values the impact that Forensics has on students’ lives. I intend to follow the example set by previous directors Judy Woodring and Jace Lux, who have spent decades transforming WKU into a national Forensics powerhouse. Under their leadership the team has achieved unprecedented success and it continues to attract the greatest coaches and students from across the nation.”
In 2013-14, the WKU forensics team won its sixth sweep of the major titles at the state, national and international levels, remaining the only school to have accomplished this milestone.
WKU won its 24th consecutive Kentucky Forensic Association State Championship; the American Forensic Association National Championship; the National Forensics Association National Tournament Championship; the NFA Lincoln-Douglas Debate National Championship and the International Forensic Association World Championship.
Newman replaces Jace Lux who became Director of Recruitment and Admissions at WKU.
