Across the nation, many campuses and communities celebrate National Volunteer Week during the month of April. This year, four WKU offices are collaborating to promote campus and community opportunities to volunteer and celebrate service together April 7-12.
WKU ALIVE Center for Community Partnerships and WKU Student Activities: Leadership & Volunteerism connected with WKU Housing and Residence Life and Gatton Academy of Mathematics & Science to coordinate more than six opportunities on campus and in the community. National Volunteer Week kicks off with a series of speakers on April 7, then continues with volunteer service on April 8, a fundraiser on April 9, then finishes the week with volunteering and a recognition breakfast on April 12.
April 7 will feature three speakers for “Do Something Good” at 7 p.m. in the Downing Student Union Auditorium. Students and community members will hear from individuals who have been active with starting and promoting causes important to them. Jennifer Shoemaker will share the story behind the Eat Up a Toe Foundation; WKU Food Good will discuss their fight to end hunger; and Dana Beasley Brown will talk about her work with Kentuckians for the Commonwealth and the Housing and Homelessness Coalition of South Central Kentucky.
Community service events planned for the week including working with the Food for All Community Garden that provides fresh food to individuals served through HOTEL INC’s food pantry; cleaning the city Greenways; working with youth at Parker Bennett Community Center through a series of service and educational activities; and assisting at Habitat for Humanity’s Habitat Restore.
April 8 will feature the “Hall of Service” event for the Gatton Academy and WKU residence halls. The halls partnered to do a service project with a nonprofit agency leading up to the April 8 culminating event in the halls.
On April 9, the WKU Yard Sale will take place in Centennial Mall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Anyone interested donating items for the Yard Sale can drop them by Student Activities in Garrett Ballroom during business hours. All proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross.
