WKU students making impact with The $100 Solution™ projects

On Nov. 25, eight WKU student groups that connected with four community and campus organizations will present their semester projects at the WKU ALIVE Center for Community Partnerships’ IMPACT Expo: A Showcase of Service-Learning at WKU.

impact_expo_sliderThe Expo, hosted by the WKU ALIVE Center for Community Partnerships, will begin at 5 p.m. in the Kentucky Museum’s Western Room.

As part of The $100 Solution™ program, the eight groups identified organizational or communal barriers and began working collaboratively to create long-term sustainable solutions that addressed the issues.

Seven of these groups are students enrolled in Nicholas Hartmann’s Folk 280: Cultural Diversity in the U.S. course, and the other group consists of the South Central Kentucky AHEC Rural Health Scholars, an elite group of experiential learners from pre-professional programs such as medicine, dentistry or physical therapy.

The groups used the five pillars of The $100 Solution™: Partnership, Capacity Building, Sustainability, Reciprocity and Reflection, to guide their projects and strengthen the communities in which they live and learn. Students apply what they are learning in the classroom, and they develop projects relevant to their disciplines.

Projects this semester include the development of additional marketing tools for the Bowling Green Community Farmers Market to advertise the new SNAP/EBT program for local citizens; increased awareness activities for the WKU Food Pantry; and developed a new play area at the Fairview Community Health Clinic.

“The IMPACT Expo is an amazing opportunity for WKU students to showcase the service-learning done with our community, thus impacting fellow citizens and improving the quality of life in Bowling Green. That’s a great contribution,” said WKU ALIVE Center’s Community Engagement Coordinator Lauren Cunningham.
