Imagewest, WKU’s student-run advertising and public relations agency, has secured a project with the U.S. Department of State. Rachel Friedland, the recruitment advertising and marketing manager, contacted the agency to participate in the U.S. Department of State Peer-to-Peer Marketing Program.
“We’re trying to explain to a younger audience anyone can represent diplomacy,” Friedland said. “Regardless of who you are, where you live, what your life and career experiences are you can represent America.”
The project involves educating high school students and college undergraduates about the U.S. Department of State and its career options available. Imagewest was chosen alongside three other student groups from around the country that will be working on the same project. This is the first year the Peer-to-Peer Marketing Program will include more than one school.
“We are very grateful to have been selected as one of the four participating organizations,” said Summer Bolton, interim director at Imagewest. “What an invaluable opportunity this is for our students to grow as a team and show off their skills.”
The project is unique, because it will span two semesters and utilize both the account and design teams at Imagewest. The program is designed to have students gain real-world experience by employing marketing strategies with peers in their regional area.
“Working with the Department of State has given me the opportunity to think critically about a real-world issue,” said Penny Sprigg, graphic designer for Imagewest. “I would never have had this experience without Imagewest.”
Imagewest has been able to amass more than 200 clients including national and international organizations since the agency opened in 2004 in WKU’s School of Journalism & Broadcasting.
