The building is located at 2319 Nashville Road next to the WKU Store, about a block from the Market’s original location at WKU’s Center for Research and Development.
The Market officially moves to its new location on the first day of Winter Market Saturday (Nov. 2) from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Market will be open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Tuesdays from 3 to 7 p.m. with an open-air market April-October that will take place outside the new location.
When WKU and CFM joined together to apply for a USDA grant, the “Local Food for Everyone” idea was born. Now, a year later, the Market has unveiled a Mobile Market bus, publishes the local food publication “Eat” and is putting the finishing touches on the renovation of the old building owned by WKU.
John Osborne, WKU Vice President for Campus Services and Facilities, encouraged the partnership.
“I am delighted that we have been able to repurpose the property for such a good use,” Osborne said. “WKU’s commitment to sustainability is demonstrated in this project in re-use, community service and support of the local food system.”
WKU Sustainability Coordinator Christian Ryan-Downing said the project has not only given new life to an old building, it has built community as well.
“Countless people have worked tirelessly every Thursday since August and put in hundreds of hours on the project,” she said. “It’s a truly inspiring sense of community accomplishment.”
Helpers have included a variety of Market vendors, volunteers and customers, as well as local artists like WKU faculty member David Jones who gave new life to the side of the old building with a mural and Rustic Nail & Co who repurposed an old school bus to create the Mobile Market bus.
Vendors like Travis and Tracy Coleman have also rolled up their sleeves to get the building ready for opening day.
“As vendors, we are excited to have a more permanent location for the Market and are grateful to WKU for their support,” said Travis Coleman, a CFM vendor and volunteer. “WKU is a great asset to this community, and it’s great to see the University supporting local farmers and vendors in such a huge way.”
The winter market will feature more than 40 vendors offering local produce, baked goods, eggs, milk, meats, cheese, fruits, vegetables, ice cream, BBQ, gluten-free items and more. With the ability to sell at the winter market, several local farmers have even built high-tunnels, allowing them to grow local produce year round.
A variety of local handmade items will also be available, including soaps, candles, crafts, jewelry and clothing. And the Market will feature the Kentucky Proud Café, offering hot, homemade breakfast, lunch and coffee.
