WKU Film Festival April 29-May 3

The 2013 Western Kentucky Film Festival will begin Monday (April 29) at WKU’s Mass Media and Technology Hall.

film festival logoSince 1995, the Western Kentucky Film Festival has been a showcase of the best in regional and national film and video production. Student and independent filmmakers have seen their works screened at the festival, which was created by WKU professor Cory Lash.

The 2013 festival includes workshops, seminars and film screenings. The contests had 300 high school entries and more than 70 college and independent entries.

Here are highlights of the schedule; all events will occur in Mass Media and Technology Hall:

Monday, April 29

  • 1:45 p.m.: Workshop on Funding & Producing Independent Film featuring independent filmmakers and WKU alumni Brandon Colvin and Tony Oswald.
  • 7 p.m.: Screening of Frames, the first independent feature film by Colvin and Oswald.

Tuesday, April 30

  • 5 p.m.: Workshop on Color Correction Strategies featuring independent producers and WKU alumni Drew Ingram and Hunter Curry.

Wednesday, May 1

  • 12:30 p.m.: High School Showcase and Awards Ceremony. (More about the high school competition.)
  • 1:45 p.m.: Workshop on Producing for Video and Film featuring WKU alum Deborah Spera, co-founder of One-Two Punch Productions and former President of Television for The Mark Gordon Company. Her credits include executive producer on Criminal Minds and Army Wives.
  • 3 p.m.: Workshop on Directing by writer/director Rob Spera (Deborah Spera’s husband) who has worked extensively in theatre, television and film, and served as a lecturer at the prestigious American Film Institute. His television and feature film credits include 2005’s Fathers and Sons.
  • 7 p.m.: Screening of the TV pilot for Reaper presented by Deborah Spera, executive producer of the show that aired on CW from 2007 to 2009. A question-and-answer session will follow.

Thursday, May 2

  • 7 p.m.: Screening of Nashville Rises, a documentary by Zac Adams that explores the response of citizens to the extensive 2010 flooding of the region.
  • 7:45 p.m.: WKU Film Showcase No. 1 featuring student short films.

Friday, May 3

  • 2:30 p.m.: WKU Film Showcase No. 2 featuring student short films.
  • 6 p.m.: WKU Film Showcase No. 3 featuring student short films.
  • 8:30 p.m.: Awards ceremony.
