WKU academic team finishes 10th in national tournament

The WKU Academic Competition Club finished 10th this weekend in the College Division II of the NAQT Intercollegiate Championship Tournament.

WKU qualified for the National Academic Quiz Tournaments championship for the first time in school history and was the highest finishing team from Kentucky at the April 13 event in Chicago.

Team members are Nick Conder, a senior from Leitchfield; Cole Phelps, a junior from Leitchfield; Matthew Riggle, a freshman from Huntsville, Ala.; Alex Malone, a Gatton Academy student from Pikeville; and Terence Donohue, a junior from Radcliff. The team advisor is Dr. Guy Jordan, assistant professor in WKU’s Art Department.

WKU finished 9-4 in the tournament with wins over Cornell University, University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Washington University in St. Louis, University of Louisville, Northwestern University, University of Central Florida, Chipola College and Jefferson Community and Technical College.

The top 10 teams in Division II were Stanford University, Yale University, University of Chicago, Harvard University, University of Illinois, Williams College, Chipola College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Kenyon College and WKU. Other schools from Kentucky were Centre College, 11th; University of Louisville, 12th; and Jefferson Community and Technical College, 22nd.
