Derek Olive has been named director of Conference & Catering Services with WKU Extended Learning & Outreach (DELO). He served as the conference coordinator of the Knicely Conference Center from 2006-2011 and assistant director of field operations for WKU Parking & Transportation from 2011-2013. He accepted the new position in January and reports to Associate Vice President of Extended Learning & Outreach Dr. Beth Laves.
“I like the event planning process and am excited to come back. I believe that helping clients is what I was meant to do. I guess you could say that it’s in my blood,” Olive said. A graduate of WKU, Olive received a bachelor of arts in hotel/restaurant management & tourism in 1994 and earned his master of public administration in 2012.
According to Olive, no two days are the same, so flexibility and a genuine desire to help people is a must. “In this line of business, you have to be willing to roll with the punches and adapt when things don’t go according to plans. I find a lot of satisfaction in problem solving and making things work for my clients.”
In his new role, Olive will oversee conferencing and catering services for clients and WKU partners at the Knicely Conference Center and the Augenstein Alumni Center. One of his first goals is to create an event planning process for the alumni center, which is slated for completion in late spring. “I also want to build on the outstanding service provided at the Knicely Center and expand the number of people we serve throughout the year.
