Two staff from WKU Study Away will present sessions at the NAFSA Region VI conference in Columbus, Ohio, this November.
With nearly 10,000 members, NAFSA: Association of International Educators is the world’s largest nonprofit professional association dedicated to international education. NAFSA and its members believe that international education and exchange—connecting students, scholars, educators and citizens across borders—is fundamental to establishing mutual understanding among nations, preparing the next generation with vital cross-cultural and global skills and creating the conditions for a more peaceful world.
Study Away Director Jerry Barnaby, a NAFSA member since 2009 and Teaching, Learning and Scholarship Knowledge Community representative on the Region VI leadership team, will present “Partnering on Domestic Programs through National Student Exchange.” This session will provide international educators with tips for using the National Student Exchange (NSE), a program that allows students to exchange for a semester or an entire year at another university within the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands or Canada. The exchange program complements study abroad programs because many NSE schools open their education abroad programs to incoming NSE students. WKU joined the NSE last year, and nine students participated in the inaugural class.
WKU Study Away Specialist Erin Greunke will co-present a session with Melanie McCallon from Murray State and Arcea Zapata de Aston from Kentucky Wesleyan College. Their session, “The Kentucky Statewide Study Abroad Symposium,” will highlight the upcoming Symposium of the same name, which is maintained through the collaboration of several universities in Kentucky. The Symposium gives students and faculty a public forum to reflect on the academic impact and value of education abroad. It’s also a chance for faculty to share their expertise in leading programs and discuss best practices with peers from across the Commonwealth and surrounding states. The next Kentucky Statewide Study Abroad Symposium will be held at Murray in the spring of 2013.
