The 5K race will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Kereiakes Park, 1220 Fairview Ave., with the Family Fun Run/Walk beginning about 6 p.m. Prior to the race, there will be a ceremony to honor local military, police, firefighters and EMS organizations as well as a moment of silence for the fallen heroes.
The Travis Manion Foundation created the 9/11 Heroes Run to honor heroes of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the men and women who have stepped forward to defend our country in the 11 years since. The 9/11 Heroes Run was inspired by Marine 1st Lt. Travis Manion’s visit to Rescue Team One in New York City shortly before his second and final combat deployment to Iraq. Manion was killed by an enemy sniper on April 29, 2007.
An estimated 25,000 runners, 50,000 spectators and 2,000 volunteers will unite at 47 race locations on the weekend of Sept. 8 for the 9/11 Heroes Run. The Bowling Green race is the only one in the Kentucky/Tennessee area.
Proceeds from the Bowling Green event will be divided between the Travis Manion Foundation, which helps families of the fallen, veterans and active duty troops, and this year’s local charity partner, The Pennyroyal Veterans Center in Hopkinsville.
Runners and walkers are encouraged to register in advance online. Race day registration will begin at 3 p.m. at Kereiakes Park. Early bird registration through Aug. 31 is $25 for the 5K and $15 for the Fun Run/Walk.
An awards ceremony will follow the race with prizes awarded to top three male and female finishers in the following age categories: 13 and under, 14-18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-55, 55 and older.
