Dr. S. Kay Gandy and Dr. Lisa D. Murley, faculty members in the School of Teacher Education at WKU, presented workshops titled “50 Successful Teaching Strategies” on Oct. 6 at Black Hills State University (BHSU) campuses in Spearfish and Rapid City, S.D.
The three-hour workshops engaged students in hands-on activities that covered a variety of ideas, such as using music clips of place names from popular songs, excavating chocolate chip coal from a cookie earth, using photographs of places to make hypotheses and inferences about lives in small towns, and competing in teams to follow clues with atlases to find a secret bomb hidden in the world.
Dr. Gandy and Dr. Murley collaborated with Dr. Kathleen Matthew, a former WKU professor, at BHSU to share these ideas with 55 pre-service teachers. The professors also met with cave specialists from Jewel Cave National Monument to plan a Study Away course for Kentucky and South Dakota teachers in June 2012.
