In 2001 Dr. Farley Norman was recognized as the “Friendliest Professor” by the Psychology Graduate Students at WKU. He believes most of his successes at WKU stem from the relationships forged with his students.
Now he can add University Distinguished Professor to his list of honors.
In July, the WKU Board of Regents appointed Dr. Norman and Dr. Robyn K. Swanson as University Distinguished Professors. The appointments are for five years and each will receive a $5,000 award package for each year of the term.
Dr. Norman completed his undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin and his master’s and doctoral degrees at Vanderbilt University.
Dr. Norman came to WKU in 1996 and has received many awards for Faculty Excellence in Research/Creativity for the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences.
He is recognized as a national and international researcher in the field of perceptual psychology and has authored more than 60 publications while using more than 80 of his students as co-authors.
He served on a National Science Foundation Perception, Action and Cognition Grant Review Panel and spent six years as a Consulting Editor for the psychology scholarly journal Perception & Psychophysics.
The professor said he was also thankful to his professional colleagues for their kind comments and support while conducting research, teaching and nominating him for the award.
“I doubt that I am really the ‘best professor of all time’, but my students do seem to genuinely enjoy my teaching and research,” Dr. Norman said. “If I have succeeded at WKU over the past 15 years, it is because of the students here at WKU.”
Dr. Norman jokingly remembers one student’s comment on a teaching evaluation that said: “Norman is one of the most intelligent and effective professors I have had at WKU. He deserves a raise!”
The UDP Committee, Provost Gordon Emslie, President Gary Ransdell and Psychology Department Head Steven Haggbloom recommended Dr. Norman.
The UDP program recognizes faculty members who have served the university with distinction with a great record in teaching, research and service. To be eligible, an appointee must have held the rank of professor for at least five years and completed 10 or more years of service to WKU.
