WKU student places third in Hearst multimedia competition

WKU junior Leslye Davis of Greensburg placed third in the first multimedia competition in the 2010-11 Hearst Journalism Awards Program.

Davis received a $1,500 scholarship for her finish in the multimedia features category. WKU’s School of Journalism & Broadcasting will receive a matching award.

After the first of two competitions, WKU is second in the Intercollegiate Multimedia Competition behind the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. The rest of the top 10 is Syracuse University; University of Montana; Arizona State University; University of Missouri; New York University; University of Southern California; Kent State University; University of Washington; and University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Often called the “Pulitzers of College Journalism,” the Hearst program, now in its 51st year, holds yearlong competitions in writing, photojournalism, broadcast and multimedia offering more than $550,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends. Points from each competition are calculated to determine the Overall Intercollegiate winners.

WKU’s School of Journalism & Broadcasting has ranked among the top eight nationally for 17 consecutive years in the Hearst overall intercollegiate competition and has won the Hearst Intercollegiate Photojournalism Championship 18 times in the past 21 years.
