Faith community nursing is a specialized nursing practice that focuses on the promotion of health and healing within the values, beliefs and practices of a faith community. “Faith Community Nursing” is a convenient, online course at WKU for registered nurses interested in this growing program.
According to course instructor Carol Bradford from the WKU School of Nursing, this program helps nursing professionals understand health as a dynamic process, encompassing the whole person and beyond – body, mind, spirit, relationships and environment.
Faith Community Nursing is rooted in the Judeo-Christian tradition and is consistent with many faiths that believe that caring for self and others is an expression of God’s love. This nursing movement is growing worldwide throughout many denominations, with trained nurses working in all 50 states and many European countries.
The program is offered through collaboration between the WKU School of Nursing, WKU Continuing Education and the Parish Nurse Ministries of Paducah Hospitals Lourdes and Western Baptist. “This is a unique collaboration that helps registered nurses bridge the gap between healthcare and ministry,” says Bradford.
The South Central Kentucky Area Health Education Center is approved by the Kentucky Board of Nursing (KBN) as a provider of continuing education. Students earn 32.0 contact hours for completing the course and evaluations. Out-of-state registrants should check with their state board of nursing to determine course eligibility for continuing education.
The curriculum is based on the 2009 Basic Preparation for Parish Nurses through the International Parish Nurse Resource Center. Participants must be Registered Nurses with a current license in the state where the faith community is located.
The registration deadline is March 18 or until the class fills. Fees are $300 per person and include course materials, and registration is going on now.
