WKU to honor Family of the Year

Barry and Karen White and their children Mitchell and Morgan will be honored Saturday as the WKU Family of the Year.

“Certainly it’s a huge honor for us,” Barry White said.

Parent and Family Weekend posterThe Whites, who live in Alvaton, were nominated by their son, Mitchell, who is a senior at WKU. “I’ve been raised a Hilltopper from day one,” he said.

The family will be recognized at the WKU vs. Louisiana-Monroe football game as part of Parent and Family Weekend.

Barry and Karen White are both WKU alums and have maintained a connection with WKU and its athletic teams. “We’ve been diehard Hilltopper fans for years and years and years,” Barry White said. “Our family has grown up with it.”

When their daughter, Morgan, turned 9 on Dec. 20, 2002, she insisted that the family, including relatives from Norway, travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., to watch the Toppers win the Division I-AA national championship instead of having a birthday party at home. “She’s truly a WKU fan,” Barry White said of Morgan, who is a junior at Greenwood High School.

In his nomination letter, Mitchell White noted his parents’ loyalty and support “sets them apart from other WKU parents.”

The family has been part of a football tailgating group for 10 years. Barry and Mitchell were in Tampa, Fla., when Ty Rogers hit the 3-pointer at the buzzer to defeat Drake in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Barry serves on the Hilltopper Athletic Foundation board.

“Supporting WKU is just what my parents do,” Mitchell White said in the nomination. “They never question whether or not they are going to a game, no matter what sport because WKU is just a huge part of their lives. My dad once said that no matter how bad his day was at work, the moment he walks into Diddle Arena for a basketball game, everything gets better.”
