The group of about 400 students that congregated at WKU on Friday (May 25) had three things in common: their college-ready ACT or SAT scores; their seventh-grade standing in school; and the incredible potential that combination creates.

The accomplished middle schoolers visited WKU to attend the Kentucky Recognition Ceremony for the Duke Talent Identification Program hosted by The Center for Gifted Studies. The event at Diddle Arena honored students for scoring at or above the average for college-bound seniors on one or more sections of the ACT or SAT this year.

In Kentucky, 2,909 seventh-graders — who initially scored in the 95th percentile on a grade-level achievement test — took the above-level assessments. More than 1,400 then qualified to be honored at the Kentucky Recognition Ceremony. Additionally, 152 were invited to the Grand Recognition Ceremony on Duke University’s campus, celebrating those who earned scores equal to or better than 90 percent of college-bound seniors on the ACT or SAT.

Nationally, more than 77,000 seventh-graders tested, and 25,328 were invited to attend a state recognition event.

Dr. Julia Roberts, executive director of The Center for Gifted Studies, noted that the ceremonies provide inspiration and encouragement for gifted young students, who need the help of educators and decision makers to continue on their current trajectories.

“Duke TIP recognizes the exceptional academic performance of seventh-graders,” she said. “This day is a wonderful celebration of high potential that must be followed up with appropriately challenging learning opportunities to develop that potential to the fullest.”

Potential was “the key word of the day,” Kentucky Rep. Carl Rollins (D-Woodford County), chair of the House Education Committee, noted in his remarks to students. He and Kentucky Department of Education Consultant for Gifted and Talented Education Kathie Anderson congratulated students on their achievements thus far but urged them to continuing setting high goals.

“I want you to understand this is the beginning,” Rollins said.

WKU President Gary Ransdell, who provided the keynote address for the ceremony, noted that the entire Commonwealth is counting on these bright seventh-graders to lead the state into an intellectually and economically prosperous future.

The Center for Gifted Studies, the Honors College at WKU and the Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky — which Newsweek recently named the nation’s top high school — are excited and ready to assist the seventh-graders along the way, he said.

“Shoot for big dreams,” Dr. Ransdell said. “Be bold. Be aggressive. Reach for your dreams, and know that there are things we can do in Kentucky to help you achieve those dreams.”

The students rounded out the day taking a closer look at those ambitions by touring WKU’s campus and the Gatton Academy.

Dr. Ransdell said he hoped the experience invigorated students as they soon set their sights on high school, then college.

“You’ve already begun to set yourself apart from other students in your area school, and don’t let that be something that ever causes you to be shy or timid or anything other than completely confident in your abilities,” he said. “You are beginning to rise.”

For the sixth year in a row, WKU students have been awarded Fulbright grants to spend a year studying and working abroad. May 2012 graduates Mario Nguyen and Alyssa Surina are the latest recipients.

Mario Nguyen
(WKU photo by Clinton Lewis)

Nguyen, the son of Patty Nguyen, is a public relations major from Dallas, Texas. He has been awarded the Fulbright-Garcías Robles Binational Business Grant to Mexico, which is a specialized grant that places recipients in internships with Mexican businesses or non-governmental organizations while enrolling them in MBA programs at a local university. The program offers grantees full support including travel to and from Mexico, university tuition, and a monthly stipend to cover living expenses.

This will be Nguyen’s first time abroad, but he considers it to be a natural extension of his experience at WKU.

“WKU emphasizes its ‘International Reach,’ and the Fulbright program really takes that mantra to a new level,” he said. “Last semester I took a course on Cultural Communication where we were given the opportunity to interact with international students from all over the world. I will now use these skills in international networking as I move forward with the Fulbright, forever building a network of colleagues from around the globe.”

Nguyen expects his Fulbright year will give him valuable international business experience, which is ideal for meeting his goal of becoming an attorney who helps businesses relocate internationally or serves on tribunals resolving international disputes.

“Over the next year, I really hope to learn more than I ever have before. I want to immerse myself in Mexican culture, perfect my competency in Spanish, and make a difference in the relations between Mexico and the U.S. in whatever capacity I am placed in,” he said.

Fulbright candidates spend several weeks and sometimes several months collecting application materials and drafting and revising their essays with Dr. Melinda Grimsley-Smith, who serves as WKU’s Fulbright Program advisor in the Office of Scholar Development. The hard work can be a valuable learning process, as Nguyen discovered.

“My application process was a learning experience. There were times I got frustrated, but for the most part I was excited and continually found moments of clarity for my future aspirations. With every step through the process, I found out more and more about what I want out of life,” he said.

“We often tell students that writing is thinking on paper, and that they get as much out of the writing process as they put in,” Grimsley-Smith said. “Mario is a perfect example of this. He might have been frustrated from time to time, but he stayed focused on his end goal. We could not be more pleased nor proud of him.”

Alyssa Surina

Surina is a Math and Economics double-major from Santa Clarita, Calif. She has been awarded a Fulbright Research Grant to study mathematics education in Xi’an, China. Surina is a member of the WKU Chinese Flagship Program and has studied in China three times while a WKU student. She will continue her language education at CET Harbin in China this summer.

“At WKU, I was given unique opportunities to study in China, and to tailor my classes to develop the analytical skills necessary to understand the global economy,” Surina said. “The Fulbright will be a continuation of the research preparation and international focus I cultivated at WKU.”

Surina’s research examines how the Chinese education system influences teacher and student motivation. She plans to spend four months studying math pedagogy and working with researchers in an experimental education lab in Xi’an. Afterward, she will spend six months observing elementary school math teachers in the classroom. The goal of her project is to create a professional development seminar for teacher networks in the United States geared towards improving math education.

“While I am certainly not the first American to study China’s education system, I believe that my background in economics and institutional change will give me a more accessible and actionable perspective on why students in China continue to outperform students in the West on standardized math tests,” she said.

Like Nguyen, Surina found the application process sometimes difficult but enlightening.

“Applying for the Fulbright helped me learn how to better communicate my research goals and strategies. It’s certainly a long application process, but you learn a lot about yourself through it,” she said.

After her Fulbright year, Surina plans to enroll in a graduate program in international economic development. She will build on the research experience and insight into how institutions affect performance she gains in China, and hopes to work with the World Bank in the future, helping develop solutions for the alleviation of poverty.

Sarah Fox

The Summer Institutes provide the opportunity for American freshmen and sophomores to go to the United Kingdom on a three- to six-week academic and cultural summer program.

Fox, a music education major, is the daughter of Brian and Susan Fox of Russellville and a graduate of Russellville High School, the Governor’s Scholars Program and Governor’s School for the Arts. The Fulbright UK Summer Institute will extend her experience with prestigious academic programs well beyond Kentucky.

“Winning this scholarship is a dream come true,” Fox said. “The music, land and people of the United Kingdom have always fascinated me, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be immersed in a culture that has had a profound effect on my heritage and is yet so foreign.”

Fox will have the opportunity to study with other high-achieving students at Newcastle University, explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK, and develop her academic ability by improving her presentation, research and communication skills.

“The summer institute at Newcastle University will be comprised of students from around the world, and it is my goal to expand my horizons by learning about each of them. I hope that my days will be filled with challenges through which I will grow, people from whom I will learn, and experiences through which I will live more fully,” she said.

An English minor, she will take one of several course options at Newcastle University, including creative writing and literary editing. Her music professors expect her to carry her talent and passion for music into a successful experience at Newcastle.

“Sarah has the heart of a solo musician, but also contains the service role of being an accompanist, which is a rare combination for a musician,” Music Department Head Mitzi Groom said. “She will be a stellar ambassador for WKU and the Department of Music. She is clearly one of our up-and-coming stars.”

Fox was supported through the process by the Office of Scholar Development, working on the application with Dr. Melinda Grimsley-Smith for several weeks.

“We had a very strong pool of applicants for the Summer Institutes this year from WKU, and although the Commission doesn’t share the numbers of students who applied, I understand from other scholarship advisors throughout the U.S. that the competition was very stiff. Sarah is just one of six American students nationwide chosen for Newcastle, so she has an awful lot to be proud of,” Dr. Grimsley-Smith said.

Fox expects her participation in the Summer Institute at Newcastle University to act as a stepping stone to further prestigious scholarships and opportunities in the future, and credits her experience at WKU for making it possible.

“The Office of Scholar Development, Honors College, and Music Department faculty have given me inspiring knowledge and genuine support, and I am so proud to be a part of this institution that every day proves its motto as ‘A Leading American University with International Reach’,” Fox said.

WKU students John Clark of Bowling Green and Abby Rudolph of Louisville earned honorable mentions for the 2012 Morris K. Udall scholarship competition.

Established by Congress in 1992, the Udall Foundation provides scholarships for students who have demonstrated commitment to a career related to the environment, tribal public policy, or Native health care. This year the Udall Foundation recognized just 130 university students through this scholarship program. Both Clark and Rudolph plan to pursue careers within the environmental field.

John Clark

Clark, a junior biology major, has always had a passion for the natural world.

“Nature has played a large role in my life through camping in Boy Scouts, bird watching with my mother, fishing with my father and grandfather, and hunting with my uncle and brother,” he said. “My experiences have made me want to conserve the natural world to that others can continue to have these outdoor experiences in the future.”

During his time at WKU, Clark has worked an interpretive park ranger at Mammoth Cave National Park, assisted with several research projects, including bat and ginseng monitoring and worked on a small mammal survey. This summer he will travel to South Africa to conduct a foraging analysis of reintroduced black rhinos.

“I now hope to learn more about the interactions that allow the world to thrive so that our remaining natural areas can be conserved,” he said.

Dr. Mike Stokes, professor of biology, has worked closely with Clark on various research initiatives at the university and serves as his research mentor for the project in South Africa.

“John Clark is a student from a small town in Kentucky who has global potential,” he said. “John’s undergraduate research project will contribute to our understanding of rhino reintroductions to private lands and, I’m confident, forecasts a significant career in wildlife-related research.”

Clark, the son of Beth and Jim Clark, will be conducting research in South Africa for the rest of the calendar year and will complete his final semester at WKU before attending graduate school.

“I would like to thank my parents, the Honors College, and the Office of Scholar Development,” he said. “I would also like to thank my beautiful fiancée for not killing me when I planned to leave the country for six and a half months.”

Rudolph, a sophomore creative writing and visual arts major, has been involved with environmental activism since she was in the ninth grade.

Abby Rudolph

“I have many passions, but environmentalism has always been central,” she said. “I became aware of mountaintop removal coal mining in middle school, when my youth group partnered with Kentuckians for the Commonwealth (KFTC) to host an ‘I Love Mountains’ concert to raise awareness and to help end the devastating practice.”

Rudolph, the daughter of John Rudolph and the late Sarah Rudolph, has spent much of her time advocating with the KFTC to abolish the practice of mountaintop removal.

While at WKU, Rudolph has worked closely with Christian Ryan-Downing, coordinator of sustainability for the university and advisor of the GreenToppers, an organization in which Rudolph participates.

“Her academic accomplishments speak for her intellectual abilities and creative talents, and make her extraordinary commitments to extracurricular initiatives all the more impressive,” Ryan-Downing said. “As a member of GreenToppers, Students for Campus Sustainability, WKU Americans for an Informed Democracy, and United Students for Fair Trade, Abby has helped WKU achieve Fair Trade University status, has organized ‘real food’ events, has raised awareness about sustainable food issues, and organized students to attend the 2011 Powershift conference.”

“The passionate citizens of KFTC and the First Unitarian Church of Louisville really helped me direct me as an activist,” Rudolph said. “I would also like to thank Wendell Berry for living and writing in such a way as to be a constant reminder of how I want to effect the world.”

About the Office of Scholar Development: The Office of Scholar Development is committed to helping WKU students in all majors and degree programs develop the vision, experience and skills to be independent, engaged scholars. OSD welcomes the opportunity to work with students interested in the Udall Scholarship or other similar opportunities.

America’s Best High Schools 2012, released online Sunday and in the May 28, 2012, print edition of the magazine, recognized 1,000 schools from across the United States. The Gatton Academy was ranked fifth in 2011 list.

Rounding out the top five schools were The School for the Talented and Gifted Magnet (Dallas, Texas), BASIS Scottsdale (Arizona), School of Science and Engineering Magnet (Dallas, Texas), and BASIS Tucson (Arizona).

Newsweek’s methodology for their rankings sought to highlight schools that focus on providing solutions to the challenges of 21st century education and prepare students for both college and life. (To read more about the Newsweek list, visit http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2012/05/20/newsweek-ranks-kentucky-academy-as-america-s-top-high-school.html)

Each school’s score is comprised of six components: four-year, on-time graduation rate (25 percent), college matriculation rate (25 percent), Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) tests per student (25 percent), average SAT/ACT scores (10 percent), average AP or IB scores (10 percent), and AP courses offered (5 percent). (To view the complete list, visit http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2012/05/20/america-s-best-high-schools.html)

Dr. Julia Roberts, executive director of the Gatton Academy, explained that the components of the methodology reflect the high-level learning necessary for successful students in a globally-competitive society.

“The United States has emphasized proficiency or grade-level learning to the exclusion of nurturing the talents of advanced learners,” Dr. Roberts said. “A promising future for our country is closely tied to the development of talent in science, mathematics, languages arts, the social sciences, and the arts. The purpose of the Gatton Academy is to extend learning opportunities for gifted students who live in all parts of Kentucky.”

WKU President Dr. Gary Ransdell underscored the unique experiences available to Gatton Academy students and the role the campus community has in engaging students at the highest level.

“What a great tribute to everyone on our faculty and to the staff of the Gatton Academy,” Dr. Ransdell said. “The key has been the manner in which WKU faculty have involved these students in serious undergraduate research and opened up international experiences for them.”

Over half of Gatton Academy students engaged in study programs abroad during the previous academic year, with opportunities in Italy, the United Kingdom, Costa Rica, China, and Taiwan. Moreover, 91 percent of recent Gatton Academy graduates participated in a research project sponsored by a university faculty mentor.

The program’s strategic partnership with WKU plays an important role in the development of students both in and out of the classroom, according to Gatton Academy director Dr. Tim Gott.

“This recognition would not have been possible without the full partnership we have with Western Kentucky University,” Dr. Gott said. “Having access to top professors and instructors, the university’s research facilities, and the support of the administration provides a pathway for advanced Kentucky students to be on equal footing with others across from the United States.”

Corey Alderdice, assistant director for admissions and public relations, also noted the recognition is something that should be shared with the more than 100 public school districts in the state that have partnered with the Gatton Academy to engage students from 107 Kentucky counties since the program’s inception.

“At the core of its mission, the Gatton Academy acts as an extension of the nearly 200 public high schools is the state of Kentucky,” Alderdice said. “These students excel not only because of the opportunities they have been provided by the Academy but also because of the preparation and experiences they have pursued at the elementary, middle, and early high school level in their home districts.”

The Gatton Academy, which opened in 2007 and is funded by the Kentucky General Assembly, is the commonwealth’s only state-supported residential high school with an emphasis in math and science. Dr. Roberts added that the announcement is the culmination of over a decade of advocacy to make the program a reality for Kentucky students.

“Fifteen years ago the idea for what has become the Gatton Academy was put forward,” Dr. Roberts said. “Ten years of advocating preceded its opening. Being recognized as the top high school in the country by Newsweek at the conclusion of the Gatton Academy’s fifth year is a dream come true.”

The WKU Office of Creative Web Services in conjunction with the Division of Enrollment Management is launching a custom Facebook application for incoming students.

The “WKU on Facebook” app will be made available by invitation only, beginning on May 16, to students admitted into the Fall 2012 semester.

The release of the app comes on the heels of the success of the “WKU Class of 2015” student Facebook group that gained more than 1,400 members, or nearly one-third of the freshman class.

“We recognize the importance of being available for students and we strive to reach out to them using the communication tools that they use every day,” said Corie Martin, WKU Manager of Creative Web Services. “The unity displayed by the Class of 2015 inspired us to find a more effective way to use Facebook so that our students would get more out of the experience. This new app enables them to connect with one another on a safe and more personal level and encourages them to connect with their classmates and to stay in school when times get tough.”

The WKU on Facebook app enables students to choose from hundreds of categories of interest including residence hall, hometown, major, student activities, and personal areas of interests like entertainment, religious preferences and more. Students can easily meet other students who share similar interests, thus building a support network of friends before they arrive at campus in the fall. In addition, WKU faculty and staff members are active in the group by answering questions and helping students in their transition into life as college students.

“The WKU on Facebook app will be beneficial to students because they will have the support of fellow students, as well as faculty and staff right at their fingertips, all in one location,” said Katie Corbin, campus administrator for WKU Housing and Residence Life. “Whether they want to meet up with a group of people to study, borrow some milk, or ask questions about a service on campus, they’ll be able to find what they need. Only WKU students and staff can access the app, so it’s a safer way to network within the WKU system. Overall, the app focuses on the whole student, not just their academic or their social lives. It’s a more holistic approach to networking in higher education.”

The WKU on Facebook app will initially be released to the incoming freshmen, but all students will be invited to join the app when they return in August for the fall semester.

The 13 winners in the 2012 Buck$ for Bright Ideas program are one step closer to making their business dreams a reality.

“We will be meeting with each winner to determine their needs and we will tailor the award to meet those needs,” said Doug Rohrer, Associate Vice President for Research and Development at WKU and Executive Director of the Central Region Innovation and Commercialization Center.

About $30,000 worth of services will be awarded to the winning entries, Rohrer said.

Buck$ for Bright Ideas is a publicly funded program that encourages residents in the 26-county Central Region to move forward with their ideas. This year’s program attracted 125 entries with winners selected in three categories: Game Changer, Big Thinker and Dreamers.

Ron Rizzo of Bowling Green received a Game Changer award for his business concept for an underwater submersible. “The concept for the new design of underwater submersible has several market paths ranging from services to the Transportation Department for bridge inspection, research in the field of underwater exploration, and hobbyist use,” he said. “The Buck$ for Bright Ideas program helps to move the concept forward by providing the resources that are required for the commercialization of the product or business plan.

“With the partnership of the ICC and the support from Doug Rohrer and Jeff Hook at the early stages of the process, I hope to make an easy transition into the business incubator ounce the company becomes a viable entity,” Rizzo said.

One of the Big Thinker award recipients was WhyWait CEO Eric Littleton, whose company has developed a smartphone app that lets customers know restaurant wait times, their happy hours, events, menus and deals.

“Buck$ for Bright Ideas will assist in the advancement of our business by financing the cost required to turn our ideas and plans into an operable software product,” Littleton said. “Ideas are easy to come by, but turning them into a tangible system generating revenue requires a substantial amount of money and devotion of time.”

Most award winners aren’t ready to publicly discuss their ideas and business concepts, but expressed appreciation for the assistance provided by the Central Region ICC.

“At this time, I’m unable to disclose the idea for the company, but the staff and team at Buck$ for Bright Ideas have really helped this project of mine move forth and put me in touch with the right people who are able to lead me ahead,” said Big Thinker award recipient Trey Copeland of Bowling Green.

Winners receive free services from regional professional firms for market research, patent research, accounting support, product design help and more. All applicants are eligible to receive one-on-one assistance with their idea at no charge.

“I would like to express my gratitude to the program for the opportunity it allows small business owners and individuals with ideas and concepts that can propel Kentucky forward,” said Scott Norris, a Dreamers award recipient from Owensboro.

The Central Region ICC’s services to help commercialize an innovation and develop a business model to create jobs in the region provide a great opportunity for budding entrepreneurs, said Samuel Hunt, a Dreamers recipient from Bowling Green.

“While I cannot divulge much about my idea, I can say that there are 600 million users of the antiquated equipment that I am attempting to modernize,” Hunt said. “The invention could potentially transform the way they all perform a certain leisure time activity and open the door for even more avid professional and recreational users in the future.”

Other recipients also said the awards would allow them to continue pursuing their innovative ideas.

“My grandmother, Julie Klug, and I are quite happy to be among those selected for prizes in the 2012 Buck$ for Bright Ideas program,” Big Thinker recipient Erin Greunke of Bowling Green said. “It validated the years of work that have gone into creating and developing my grandmother’s idea. The program has given us a renewed boost to continue working toward getting the idea to market.”

Dreamers award recipient Jenniffer Dixon of Elizabethtown agreed. “It’s nice to know that my bright idea isn’t just a good idea in my head alone but that other people find it interesting and worth looking into,” she said. “I’m excited and look forward to making this idea a reality and the Buck$ for Bright Ideas program will hopefully help me move in the right direction and achieve that reality.”

Even the Buck$ for Bright Ideas applicants who didn’t receive awards have ideas that need to be further discussed, Rohrer said. “All contestants are encouraged to meet with their local ICC offices in Bowling Green, Owensboro and Elizabethtown to get advice on how to commercialize their ideas,” he said.

And people with innovative ideas don’t have to wait until next year’s Buck$ for Bright Ideas program. “Anyone with any kind of idea should come and see us any time,” Rohrer said. “We’re open year round and all the offices are available to assist people with their ideas.”

The Central Region includes the following counties: Daviess, McLean, Ohio, Hancock, Butler, Logan, Simpson, Warren, Allen, Barren, Edmonson, Grayson, Breckinridge, Meade, Hardin, Nelson, Washington, Hart, Larue, Marion, Green, Taylor, Metcalfe, Adair, Cumberland and Monroe.

The following winners were announced May 2 at WKU’s Center for Research and Development:
