Classes for the fall 2014 semester at WKU begin Aug. 25. Here are some key events and reminders:

Class of 2018 arrives Aug. 16-17 for M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan

First-year students will begin arriving Aug. 16-17 for M.A.S.T.E.R. (Making Academic and Social Transitions Educationally Rewarding) Plan activities. (Check out the list of move-in times for residence halls.) M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan events begin Aug. 17 and continue through Aug. 21.

M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan features educational workshops and informational sessions as well as numerous other activities including Convocation, Class of 2018 photo, CloseUP Theatre Troupe performance, a concert by Green River Ordinance, WK&U street festival, Big Red’s Blitz community service event, TopperU spirit event, and Campus and Community Involvement Fair.

Welcome Program for Commuter Students Aug. 17

A Welcome Program for Commuter Students will be held Aug. 17.

New for 2014 is a Welcome Program for Commuter Students from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 17 at Downing Student Union. The event is designed to provide the information first-year and transfer commuter students need to help make their WKU experience as successful as possible. After the program, commuter students will participate in the M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan Convocation at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium. M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan educational sessions for first-year commuter students will be held Aug. 18.

President will welcome students, other groups to WKU

In addition to welcoming the Class of 2018 at 8 p.m. Aug. 17, WKU President Gary Ransdell will welcome international students at 5 p.m. Aug. 12; Confucius Institute Chinese teachers at 5 p.m. Aug. 14; commuter students at 4 p.m. Aug. 17; Gatton Academy students at 5 p.m. Aug. 18; new WKU faculty members at 7 p.m. Aug. 19; WKU Forensics Team at 9 a.m. Aug. 20; Honors College freshmen at 5 p.m. Aug. 25; and Navitas students at 5 p.m. Aug. 26.

Roundabout ribbon cutting Aug. 8

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will conduct a ribbon cutting for the roundabout at U.S. 31W and University Boulevard at 9 a.m. Aug. 8 at the University Boulevard parking lot. More: Roundabout driving instructions.

New WKU apartments opening; dedication Aug. 11

Housing and Residence Life’s new 1355 Kentucky Street Apartments will open for the fall semester. A dedication ceremony will be held at 3:15 p.m. Aug. 11.

Academic Transitions Program Aug. 21-22

ATP (new student orientation) sessions will be conducted Aug. 21-22 at the Knicely Conference Center.

Graduate student reception Aug. 21

A welcome reception for graduate students will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Augenstein Alumni Center.

President’s Opening Convocation Aug. 22

The President’s Opening Convocation for faculty and staff will begin at 8 a.m. Aug. 22 at Van Meter Hall.

Following the convocation, WKU Regional Campuses will host a meet and greet at WKU’s Faculty House. Remarks and the introduction of Dr. Evelyn Ellis, new Regional Chancellor at WKU Elizabethtown-Fort Knox will begin at 10:15 a.m.

Welcome reception Aug. 26 at WKU Elizabethtown-Fort Knox

A reception for Dr. Evelyn Ellis, new Regional Chancellor at WKU Elizabethtown-Fort Knox, will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. (Eastern time) Aug. 26 in the atrium of the Elizabethtown Community and Technical College. Dr. Ransdell will make remarks at 3:30 p.m. Dr. Ellis had been Chief of Staff/Education Operations Manager at the U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity, Department of Defense Dependents’ School in South Korea.

Welcome Back WKU Festival Aug. 27

The annual event, hosted by the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce, will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 27 at the South Lawn.

Military Science ceremony Aug. 28

The Hilltopper Battalion Army ROTC will conduct its annual activation ceremony for new cadets at 4 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Diddle Arena auxiliary gym.

Downing Student Union grand opening Aug. 29

The renovated Dero Downing Student Union will reopen for the fall semester. A grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting will begin at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 29.

WKU football kicks off Aug. 29

The Hilltoppers open the 2014 football season with a “White Out” game against Bowling Green State at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 29 at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium.

New program leaders

In addition to WKU Elizabethtown-Fort Knox, other offices welcomed new leaders this summer including the following: Tiffany Robinson, former Director of the Office of the Registrar at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, is WKU’s new University Registrar; Jace Lux, former director of WKU’s forensic program, is WKU’s Director of Recruitment and Admissions; Laurie Monarch, who most recently served as Director of Overseas Studies at Georgetown University, is WKU’s new Director of Study Abroad and Global Learning; Dr. Lynette Breedlove, a prominent gifted and talented educator from Texas, is the new Director of the Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky at WKU; and Ganer Lee Newman IV, a WKU graduate who had been Director of Individual Events for the Illinois State University Forensics Union, is WKU’s new Director of Forensics.

Veterans Upward Bound accepting students

Attention U.S. Military Veterans, Guardsmen & Reservists, Veterans Upward Bound at WKU is accepting new students for the fall 2014 semester. This free program includes refresher classes, financial aid advising, gas stipends, scholarships and more. To learn more, call (270) 745-5008.
