Habitat chapter members to spend 2013 fall break rebuilding homes

Fourteen members of WKU’s Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter will spend their fall break in the West Liberty and Frenchburg areas to continue efforts to rebuild homes destroyed by tornadoes that swept through eastern Kentucky in March 2012.

Making its third trip to the region, WKU’s Habitat chapter will be working in the Menifee and Morgan county communities Thursday, Friday and Saturday (Oct. 3-5).

“Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to ‘a world where everyone has a decent place to live’ – this is the Habitat for Humanity International mission statement,” said chapter advisor Bryan Reaka. “We as WKU Campus Chapter assist with this task through activities such as education of the public on the issues of substandard housing, fundraisers to assist with the cost of building homes, advocacy for political involvement and support for governments to help in the elimination of substandard housing issues as well as building — both locally and away over breaks from school. This trip to eastern Kentucky falls into the building category, but Habitat for Humanity not only builds houses, it builds relationships, communities and hope for the future. We are a community of builders building in Faith, Hope and Love.”

In addition to Reaka, WKU participants in the 2013 fall break trip include the following: Abdullah Aldhahri, a sophomore accounting major from Saudi Arabia; Lee Bledsoe, a geoscience graduate student from Bowling Green; Alex Castlen, a healthcare graduate student from Owensboro; Audrey Castlen, a junior communication disorders major from Owensboro; Jeffry Edwards, a senior architectural science and music major from Murray; Missy Graehler, a junior social work and sociology major from Lexington; Michael Harruff, a junior advanced manufacturing major from Crestwood; Imari Hazelwood, a graduate student in literacy education from Lebanon; Ryan Hunt, a junior construction management major from Paducah; Kateri Rhodes, a senior graphic design major from Whitesville; Kendra Lynn Whitaker, a junior architectural science major from Milton; Breanna Wright, a freshman elementary education major from Danville; and Gavin Young, a sophomore civil engineering major from Glasgow.
