Lowen is the producer and writer of Bully, a feature documentary that focuses on America’s bullying crisis, which she developed, produced and wrote in partnership with award-winning director Lee Hirsch. Filmed over the course of the 2009/2010 school year, Bully gives viewers a glimpse into the pained and often endangered lives of bullied youth.

Through her work on Bully, Lowen has lectured extensively on bullying, school climate and culture. She is the co-author of The Essential Guide to Bullying, Prevention and Intervention with Cindy Miller, a school social worker, psychotherapist, educator and parent consultant. Lowen is also the editor of Bully: An Action Plan for Teachers and Parents to Combat the Bullying Crisis.

About the series: The lecture series is in honor of Mary E. Vass Hensley (1906-1966) whose educational career spanned 39 years from teaching at a one-room school in Clay County to teaching English and History in Hart County. She received her bachelor’s degree (1952) and master’s degree (1958) from Western Kentucky State College. In 1998, her son Robert “Bobby” Hensley made a gift to WKU to create the lecture series in honor of his mother for her commitment to her family and her educational career.
