Chinese Language Flagship program at WKU growing

With 26 new students, this fall will mark the enrollment of the largest cohort of the Chinese Language Flagship Program at WKU since its inception in 2009.cfp_logo

Sponsored by The Language Flagship, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, WKU is one of only 11 universities in the United States with a grant to support this immersion-style intensive Chinese program.

Dr. Jianjun He, a faculty member in the program since 2011, has been selected as the new Academic Director, and will be leading a rapidly growing and evolving program. He will continue to build upon the established strengths of the program that has doubled the number of applicants in one year.  In addition, a Fulbright Language Teaching Assistant from Taiwan, Ms. Pei-Yu Lin, will be joining the instructional team this fall.

The new students begin their study of Chinese at WKU with the goal of reaching a Superior, or near-native, level of Chinese proficiency before they graduate.  To attain this challenging goal, students participate in multiple domestic and international intensive language programs and internships, including a year of study and professional work in Nanjing, China.

In addition to the generous funding and support provided by The Language Flagship, students have worked with the Office of Scholar Development at WKU to apply successfully for nationally competitive scholarships such as the David L. Boren Scholarship, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, the U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship, and the Fulbright Fellowship to fund additional programs abroad.
