Students honored in poetry contest

WKU students took the top three places in the annual Flo Gault Poetry Competition for Kentucky undergraduate students, sponsored by Sarabande Books of Louisville.

Haley Edwards, a Bowling Green junior, took first with Portrait of My Mother in Cigarette Ashes. She received $500, a letterpress broadside of her winning poem and the poem will be published on the Sarabande website.

Paul Shirley, a Summersville senior, finished second with Check Out That Fish. He received $200.

Jarred Johnson, a Somerset freshman, tied for third with 3052 HWY 39 Somerset, Kentucky. He received $100.

Three WKU students received honorable mentions: Brittany Cheak, a Frankfort senior, with Lethologica; Meg Kennedy, a Louisville senior, with Constructing the Eulogy; and Shyla Washington, a Bowling Green sophomore, with My Coop.
