WKU PRSSA chapter hosting annual ‘Panel of PRofessionals’ Nov. 27

The Kelly Thompson Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) at WKU will host its annual “Panel of PRofessionals” at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 27) in the Mass Media and Technology Hall Gallery.

The title of the panel is “Communicating Publicly: Discussions with Governmental and Public Affairs Strategists.”

Chapter president Drew Mitchell has worked with members of the organization’s executive board and chapter advisor associate professor Vicki Bagwell, APR, to plan the event. All of the WKU community is invited to attend this event as it provides a unique opportunity to look into the world of professional communication and politics.

“In the wake of a very active political season, we hope to provide more insight into the ‘behind-the-scenes’ nature of governmental and quasi-governmental organizations,” Mitchell said. “Each of the panelists who will be presenting has dedicated their careers to streamlining messages between complicated bureaucratic entities and the public. There is much that can be learned from these distinguished guests.”

Panelists include:

  • Teresa Jameson is a 14-year veteran of the United States Air Force. In this capacity, Jameson worked as a public affairs specialist at many locations throughout Europe and the United States. Her tenure with the Air Force included an assignment at the Pentagon where the worked on special projects commemorating the 50th anniversaries of World War II and the Air Force.
  • Chris Poynter, a 1994 WKU graduate, was editor-in-chief of the College Heights Herald and a longtime reporter for The Courier-Journal. He left journalism to join the administration of former Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson and then helped run the Fischer for Mayor campaign in 2010. In his current role, he oversees all aspects of internal and external communications for city government and serves as the mayor’s chief spokesman.
  • Emily Richard, a graduate of WKU, serves as assistant vice president, strategic communications and external affairs for the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA). In this position, Richard is responsible for directing strategic communications, advertising and marketing strategies, and coordinating external relations activities for MNAA. She is an active member of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA).
