One hundred members of Gamma Sigma Sigma National Service Sorority will travel from three other states to participate in their regional Leadership Conference at WKU on Saturday (Feb. 25). Participants are expected to visit from Tennessee, Missouri and Ohio schools.
The Beta Sigma Chapter at WKU will serve as a host to the group and location for the first of five Leadership Conferences this year. The organization functions under the purpose of assembling college and university students together in the spirit of service. Members will learn about developing leadership skills and service opportunities at the conference, which will be held at Downing University Center.
“Western Kentucky University was an ideal location for the conference because of its central location and its mission to prepare students to be productive, engaged, and socially responsible citizen leaders of a global society,” said Karen Kerr, National Program Director.
The Beta Sigma Chapter works throughout the local community. The eight-member group volunteers with the Center for Courageous Kids and Salvation Army, and participates in fundraisers for their service partners, American Cancer Society and March of Dimes.
All of the members attending the conference have been asked to donate food pantry items for the American Red Cross. Ashley Bernaugh, Development Coordinator, will speak to the group about service with the Red Cross and disaster relief efforts. The attendees plan to donate the food to the American Red Cross along with money raised from their benefit raffle.
“The Beta Sigma Chapter is really honored to host the conference, and we appreciate the support of the university with this event. We look forward to meeting other members, sharing ideas, and implementing new programs on campus and in the community,” said Louisville senior Christian Finch, Beta Sigma Chapter president.
