WKU’s office of Student Activities hosted “Penny Wars” on Feb. 21 in the lobby of the Downing University Center to raise money for the United Way of Southern Kentucky. Various campus groups set up collection buckets and battled for donation control. Pennies inserted into a group’s jar counted as positive points, while other coins and bills added negative points. The overall winner for this year’s event is Omega Phi Alpha with a total of $25.61 in pennies.
All the money raised will be donated to United Way of Southern Kentucky, a nonprofit organization that raises money and donates to various philanthropic organizations. This year’s total for money raised is $481.85, which is up from about $250 raised last year. Another Student Activities fundraising event for the United Way will be “ Jail & Bail” on May 1. The event has various volunteers placed in jail and requires donations to be made to bail them out.
