SGA awards Study Away scholarships to five civil engineering students

WKU’s Student Government Association awarded scholarships to five civil engineering students taking a Study Away course during Winter Term 2012.

The $100 scholarships were awarded to Jacob Chaney, a senior from Monticello; Lucas Gilliam, a senior from Russellville; Jacob Merriman, a junior from Newburgh, Ind.; Michael Pickett, a junior from Radcliff; and Russell Whatley, a senior from Louisville.

Scholarship recipients will study floodplain management at some of the nation’s largest flood control works throughout the Southwest, including Arizona, Nevada and southern California.

According to Jerry Barnaby, Study Away program director: “Engineering students often find it hard to undertake off-campus courses that meet their program requirements, so this Study Away course was designed just for them.”

Barnaby added that that SGA support is a key measure of the importance students place on unique off-campus learning opportunities.

Study Away is a unit of the Division of Extended Learning and Outreach.
