A new community children’s chorus is coming to southern Kentucky, offering music education for grades 4-6. Consideration will be given to those in grade 7 if space allows. SOKY Children’s Chorus is an ensemble program developed through a partnership between WKU Department of Music and WKU Continuing Education.
Founding director Dr. Jennifer Adam, an assistant professor in the WKU Department of Music, said the main purpose of the Chorus is to supplement programs offered through local schools and churches. “We hope to expand students’ knowledge of choral literature and provide them with additional local and regional performance opportunities,” Adam said. “The Chorus will foster personal, social and musical growth for each student.”
Adam will supervise the Chorus, including programs, rehearsals and performances. WKU music majors will assist with rehearsals, recitals and concerts, and music education students from WKU will serve as assistant directors and accompanists. Additional support for the program will be provided through the Bowling Green-Western Choral Society.
Auditions will be held Nov. 29 and Dec. 13 from 5:45 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. at the Knicely Conference Center on WKU’s South Campus. The program will run Jan. 24-May 1, and rehearsals will take place Tuesday evenings at First Christian Church in downtown Bowling Green. Program fees are $150 per semester. WKU alumni, faculty and staff receive a $25 discount. There is also a $25 second-child discount.
Audition pre-registration is available by calling (270) 745-1912.
