Regents OK property purchase at farm

The WKU Board of Regents on Friday approved the purchase of 24 acres adjacent to the University Farm.

The land, which includes a wood-frame house, garage, cottage, log house and barn, is bounded on three sides by the farm and by the Natcher Parkway on the fourth. WKU will buy the property for the appraised value of $365,000.

Blaine Ferrell, dean of the Ogden College of Science and Engineering, said the structures are in good shape and that the log house will be restored and used to showcase activities at the farm.

He said he is also working with the Potter College of Arts & Letters to use the house to feature an artist.

In other business, the Board:

  • Approved contract extensions for Men’s Basketball Head Coach Ken McDonald and Women’s Basketball Head Coach Mary Taylor Cowles. The contracts give the coaches a four-year window to operate the programs, Athletics Director Ross Bjork said.
  • Approved the contract with new Baseball Coach Matt Myers.
  • Approved a Master of Music degree type.
  • Approved undergraduate minors in Nutritional and Food Chemistry and Teaching English as a Second Language.
  • Approved undergraduate certificates in Drinking Water Operations, Data Analysis using SAS and Long-term Care Administration.
  • Approved University Distinguished Professor appointments for J. Farley Norman, a professor of Psychology, and Robyn K. Swanson, professor of Music and coordinator of Music Education.
  • Approved faculty emeritus appointments for Linda Pulsinelli and James Barksdale Jr., both from the Department of Mathematics.
