WKU will offer the Faith Community Nursing health ministry course this fall. The course emphasizes health and healing within a faith community.
Faith Community Nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that focuses on the promotion of health within the context of the values, beliefs, and practices of a faith community. It is rooted in the Judeo-Christian tradition and is consistent with many faiths that believe that caring for self and others is an expression of God’s love.
Carol Bradford from the WKU School of Nursing instructs the course. Bradford says the program is a great opportunity for registered nurses who want to bridge the gap between healthcare and ministry.
The online course takes place Oct. 3-Nov. 21 through a collaboration between the WKU Department of Nursing, WKU Continuing Education and the Parish Nurse Ministries of Paducah Hospitals Lourdes and Western Baptist. Fees are $300 per person and include course materials.
The program has been submitted to the Kentucky Board of Nursing for 34 contact hours. Out of state registrants should check with their state board of nursing to determine course eligibility for continuing education. Registration ends Sept. 16.
The curriculum is based on the 2009 Basic Preparation for Parish Nurses through the International Parish Nurse Resource Center. Participants must be Registered Nurses with a current license in the state where the faith community is located.
