Two WKU English students have won awards from the Sigma Tau Delta international English honor society.
Jennifer Kiefer, a Louisville senior, won first, and Audrey Gearhart, a junior from Newburgh, Ind., placed third in the Isabel Sparks President’s Awards for Original Fiction at the Sigma Tau Delta national convention in Pittsburgh. Kiefer’s entry, titled “Hands,” earned her $500, while Gearhart’s, titled “Yellow,” earned her $150.
Walker Rutledge, assistant professor of English and Sigma Tau Delta faculty sponsor, said WKU students have won honors before, “but this was our most successful year ever.”
There were more than 1,000 participants from 184 colleges and universities at the convention March 23-26.
Established in 1924, Sigma Tau Delta’s central purpose is to confer distinction upon students of the English language and literature in undergraduate, graduate and professional studies. Sigma Tau Delta also recognizes the accomplishments of professional writers who have contributed to the fields of language and literature. WKU has been a member of Sigma Tau Delta since 1964.
