Several WKU students presented research during the 2011 Posters-at-the-Capitol event Feb. 10 in Frankfort.
Chad Willis of Bowling Green presented “One-Step Synthesis of Highly Monodispersed, Spherical Gold Nanoparticles of 10-120 nm and Applications in Chemistry and Biology” with students Jane Bartonojo of Kenya, Vivek Badwaik of India and Jesse Evans of Dunmor, and faculty mentors Shivendra Sahi and Rajalingam Dakshinamurthy.
Nilesh Sahi of Bowling Green presented “Novel Purification Protocol for Heparin Binding Proteins – Relevance in Biopharmaceuticals” with students Sumit Batra of India, Zachary Laux of Elizabethtown (Gatton Academy student), Kristen Mikulcik of Murray, Heather Shockley of Bowling Green and Camille Turner of Radcliff (Gatton Academy student), and faculty mentors Eric Conte and Rajalingam Dakshinamurthy.
Aaron Bell of Scottsville presented “Seeing the Spiral from the Arms: Modeling the Interstellar Medium of the Milky Way” with faculty mentor Steven Gibson.
John Ferguson of Union (Gatton Academy student) presented “Flourescein Isothiocyanate Functionalized Bridged-polysiloxane Nanoparticles for Imaging Applications” with faculty member Hemali Rathnayake.
Elizabeth Fugate of Madisonville presented “A Study of Cationic Effects, Hydrogen Pyroxide, and Photolysis on Nitrate Through Raman Spectroscopy” with Natalie Schieber of Elizabethtown (Gatton Academy student) and Krysta Waldrop of Lancaster (Gatton Academy student) and faculty mentor Matthew Nee.
Wally Hughes of Nancy presented “Citizen Journalism: Historical Roots and Contemporary Challenges” with faculty mentor Mac McKerral.
Sarah Ward of Glasgow presented “Predicting Heterogeneously Broadened Line-Shapes for Conjugated Oligomers” with faculty mentor Jeremy Maddox.
WKU President Gary Ransdell, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Gordon Emslie, Vice President for Research Gordon Baylis, Dean of Ogden College of Science and Engineering Blaine Ferrell, Associate Dean of Ogden College Bruce Kessler, and Chemistry Department Head Cathleen Webb also attended the event.
