Greenup County 4-H team wins FIRST LEGO state robotics championship

“LEGO Barbarians” from Greenup County 4-H in Wurtland took the overall championship Saturday (Jan. 29) in the Kentucky FIRST LEGO League State Robotics Championship at WKU.

Members of “LEGO Barbarians” are Anna Reneau, Taylor Hsieh, Tanner Sexton, Dylan Cox, Samantha Spence, Derrick Thompkins, Michael Nestor and Lane McKenzie; coaches are James Reneau and Beth Sexton.

About 310 participants on 43 teams competed in the state tournament at WKU’s Diddle Arena.

Second place overall went to  “CEC Cougars Red” from Christian Education Consortium in Louisville. Team members are Chandler Anderson, Joshua Crask, Cole Davis, Hannah Mooney, Spencer Pennington, Braden Shepard, Tristan Shepard and Cameron West; coaches are Rebecca Cecil and Dara Davis.

Team Spirit Award (first place):  “Ingenious Engineers” from St. Joseph School in Cold Spring.  Team members are Matthew Batshoun, Ervin Madison, Daniel Howard, Peter Kahman, Hope Karnes, Reid Nuefelder, Patrick Seibert and Jack Scharstein; coaches are Gaby and Jennifer Batshoun.

Team Spirit Award (second place):  “Denominators,” a neighborhood team from Lexington. Team members are Seth Bashore, Cody Leslie, Kylie Russ, Ryan Norton, Taylore Jordan, Zachary Jordan and Alec Barron; coaches are Jeff Norton and Jessie Yannelli.

Judge’s Award (first place);  “Robo Hawks” from Larue Robotics Club in Larue County. Team members are Tori Fulkerson, Celeste Menard, Ethan Johnson, Isaac Johnson and Parker Smith; coaches are David Walsh and Price Smith.

Judge’s Award (second place):  “LEGO Devils” from Russell Middle School in Russell. Team members are Jacob Davis, Kyle Blevins, Daniel Abul-Khoudoud, Leah Motimaya, Aaron Tatterson, Josh Elliott, Aaron Hoback, Natalie May, M’Kinzy Wixsom and Connor Knight; coaches are Steven Branim and Missy Davis.

Project (Research) Award (first place):  “The Accelerators” from North Marshall Middle School in Calvert City. Team members are Cassidy Adair, Darren Cornwell, Amber Crawford, Robert Fitzgerald, Ryan Livesay, Grant Miller, Adam Padgett and Wally Schmidt; coaches are Bill Kunnecke, Kurt Schmidt and Andy Miller.

Project (Research) Award (second place):  “Brainy Bots” from New Haven Elementary in Union. Team members are Will Henry Richards, Ken Ryumae, Scott Dieter and Alex Wilson; coaches are Karen Cheser and Masaru Ryumae.

Teamwork Award (first place):  “Nerdy Nurses” from T.C. Cherry Elementary School in Bowling Green. Team members are Caine Burke, Liam Chappell, Tanner Gantt, Dylan Gelderman, Eve Lewis, Tucker Page, E.J. Shoulders, Khatelin White and Ashley Wilkinson; coaches are Carrie Koedyker and Megan Lavery.

Teamwork Award (second place):  “The Body Builders” from Potter Gray Elementary School in Bowling Green. Team members are Meredith Chaffin, Maxwell Conte, Colin Haase, Elise Hughes, Chloe Kelley, Gabrielle Larios, Clay Marsh, Zayleah Robinson, Chapel Tinius and Mills Turner; coaches are Carrie Koedyker and Ryan Hughes.

Robot Performance Award (first place):  “The LEGO Men,” a homeschool team from the east end of Louisville. Team members are Kevin Combs, Michael Delnay, Ross Delnay, Joshua Hester and Stephen Hester; coaches are Tony Delnay and Jayme Delnay.

Robot Performance Award (second place):  “The Body Builders” from Potter Gray Elementary School in Bowling Green. Robot Design Award (first place):  “JC-3PO” from Jessie M. Clark Middle School in Lexington. Team members are Nathan Allan, Jonah Andreatta, Benjamin Bossert, William Bossert, Alex Brinkhorst, Ben Howell, Drew Norby, Seth Rogers, Mitchell Slavik and Jared Young; coaches are Mark Evans and Stacey Rogers.

Robot Design Award (second place):  “Warrior Bots” from Winburn Elementary School in Lexington. Team members are Ben Gardner, Samuel Springate, Andrew Tapia; coach is Ashley Rosen.
