Dr. Gordon Emslie, WKU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, has named Dr. Beth Laves as Associate Vice President for Extended Learning and Outreach.
Dr. Laves served as interim associate vice president following the retirement of Dr. Don Swoboda in October.
Dr. Laves came to WKU in 1997 and in 2004 was named Assistant to the Dean/Program Development of the newly created Division of Extended Learning & Outreach (DELO), assisting the dean on special projects, developing new outreach programs and providing leadership to various units including Cohort Program/Dual Credit and Independent Learning. Dr. Laves played a key role in the development of the highly successful WKU Winter Term program and the recently formed Study Away unit. She also led WKU’s Summer Sessions into a nationally recognized program.
Dr. Laves received her Bachelor of Science (1981) and Master of Education (1988) from the University of Missouri and earned her Doctorate of Education from University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2010.
DELO partners with WKU faculty and departments to offer credit and noncredit educational opportunities beyond the Bowling Green campus.
Dr. Laves said that she plans to continue to expand DELO’s outreach efforts in order to meet WKU’s goals of extending its reach beyond the Bowling Green campus. “Educational outreach is central to fulfilling WKU’s vision,” she said. “I am thrilled to have this opportunity, and I look forward to leading DELO into an even stronger division.”
According to Dr. Emslie, DELO will continue to be a significant part of WKU’s future. “I envision an increasing role for DELO as we strive to provide an appropriate level of integration of extended learning and outreach into the overall higher education experience at WKU,” he said. “I am confident that under her leadership great progress will continue to be made in all aspects of the DELO enterprise.”
Dr. Laves officially begins her new position Feb. 1.
