A group of third-graders in the Project GEMS (Gifted Education in Math and Science) program in Warren County schools will visit WKU and Southern Recycling on Oct. 18 as part of a “green” tour.
About 30 students from Cumberland Trace Elementary and Lost River Elementary will be touring green initiatives under way on the WKU campus, according to Robin Hume, program coordinator for WKU’s Center for Environmental Education and Sustainability.
The tour will begin at 9:15 a.m. at the Center’s office in Jones-Jaggers Hall and will conclude at 1:25 p.m.
At WKU, the students will learn about several green/sustainability efforts as well as environmental issues including how the karst landscape affects water quality; solar energy projects at the WKU ALIVE Center; recycling and composting; how some parking lots are being replaced with green space; and Big Red Bikes.
The students will visit Southern Recycling to learn more about recycling in the community.
