Honors newsletter wins national award

Areté, the student-produced newsletter of the Honors College at WKU, has been recognized with its third national award in three years.

Areté placed first in the student-published division competition sponsored by the National Collegiate Honors Council. The award will be presented at the annual NCHC conference in October.

“We have been publishing Areté since spring of 2006 and have only been eligible to compete nationally for three years,” faculty advisor Angela Jones said. “All three years resulted in awards, including another first and a third.”

Dr. Jones, who is also an assistant professor of English, said the recognition honors “our dedicated staff of students who volunteer their time throughout the school year to make our newsletter a success.”

As a result of this year’s place in the competition, members of the Areté staff have been invited to present at the session “How To Put Together A Winning Newsletter” at next month’s NCHC conference.  “This panel is a conference tradition where the winners and judges of each year’s contest come together to talk about their experiences with their own newsletters and to share information with the audience and other panelists,” Dr. Jones said.

“As faculty advisor for Areté, I am delighted that our publication continues to earn national recognition for WKU and to build on our Honors College’s reputation for excellence,” she said.  “Of course, we also appreciate the feedback we receive from our more local readers:  our audience includes not only current and prospective Honors College students but also WKU faculty, staff, and administrators; friends of WKU; and prospective donors.”

Areté editors were Katie Knecht of Paducah (fall 2009) and Amanda Loviza of Midlothian, Va. (spring 2010). Other staff members included: Erica Ashley of Bee Spring; Elizabeth Beilman of Louisville; Mary Boothe of Georgetown; Nikki Deese of Franklin, Tenn.; Cameron Franey of Owensboro; Cristen Friddell of Mount Juliet, Tenn.; Tate Goins of Frankfort; Meghan Kennedy of Louisville; Sara Kuhl of Alexandria; Ashley Norman of Union; Kali O’Rourke of Madison, Ala.; Lindsey Paxton of Greensburg; Caitlin Pike of LaGrange; Bethany Riggs of Upton; Jake Ryle of Burlington; Ashton Skates of Paducah; Kelly Smith of Bowling Green; and Ramona Sudbeck of Omaha, Neb.

In addition to distributing print copies, each issue of the newsletter is posted on TopScholar to reach an even wider group of potential readers, both within and outside the WKU community.

About the Honors College at WKU: WKU is home to the only Honors College in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, providing students the individualized experience of a highly-selective private college with all the resources and benefits of a larger university at a public school price.
