The WKU team of Andy Southard and David Stephens finished third in the 2010 BoatU.S. Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship at Lake Lewisville in Texas.
Southard of Madisonville and Stephens of Louisville had a total catch of 30.6 pounds in the May 24-28 event that attracted 165 teams. A team from Georgia won with 36.41 pounds followed by North Carolina-Charlotte with 33.56.
Next up for Southard and Stephens is the inaugural Collegiate Bass Fishing Open presented by Pepsi June 23-25 on Kentucky Lake.
“We are very excited about our finish in Texas,” said Stephens, who is president of the Hilltopper Bass Club. “It is the second time in four years a WKU team has finished in the top five in the national championship. This tournament has really topped off our very successful season thus far. We can’t wait to see what Kentucky Lake has in store for us. The last time we fished there, a WKU team won the event and another placed in the top 10.”
Dr. Steve Huskey, biology faculty member, is the club advisor. Sponsors include Renegade Marine, Prowler Pro Pitch Lures and Slongs Fishing Lures.
“I’ve had lots of experience with bass fishing and fish research and I can honestly say that the WKU Hilltopper Bass Club represents one of the best group of fishermen and women in the country,” Dr. Huskey said. “Their success is the result of dedication, hard work and a love of being on the water.”
Also competing in the national championship was the team of Cody Napier of Beech Creek and Nick Gerard of Bowling Green.
The BoatU.S. Collegiate Bass Fishing Series is sanctioned by the Association of Collegiate Anglers and will be televised on Versus by Careco Multimedia beginning in August. The weekly television series will showcase the yearlong lineup of events leading up to the championship including this month’s Collegiate Bass Fishing Open.
