WKU engineering students participated in the American Society of Civil Engineers 2010 Ohio Valley Student Conference April 23-24.

WKU’s concrete canoe team and its boat “The Phoenix” finished second overall. The team placed first in men’s sprint race, men’s distance race, women’s sprint race, women’s distance race and coed sprint race; second in final product; and third in design paper.
Concrete canoe team members are: Sarah Bertke of Reynolds Station; Clint Ervin of Greensburg; Jenny Fairchild of Cromwell; Michael Hendrix of Lewisburg; Emily Kinslow of Cave City; Jordan Kirkendoll of Maceo; Alex Krumenacher of Hendersonville, Tenn.; Erica Rigney of Mount Washington; Nathan Roberts of Whitesville; Ben Schafer of Westmoreland, Tenn.; Austin Shields of Lexington; Luke Thompson of Owensboro; and Paul Warner of Bowling Green. Also working with the team were electrical engineering students Randy Fulling of Oakland City, Ind., and Billy Seng of Louisville who created a robotic concrete etching device to improve the canoe’s aesthetics.

The WKU steel bridge won the aesthetics award. Team members are co-captains Lizabeth Likins and Derrick Dennison, both of Leitchfield; Nemanja Milosevic of Centinje, Montenegro; Jeff R. Cheyne of Gallatin, Tenn.; Paul Warner of Bowling Green; Daniel Krek of Norcross, Ga.; Cody Pardue of Brownsville; Daniel Douglas of Elizabethtown; Andrew Brooks of Bowling Green; Clay Cook of Worthville; and Trey Just of Bowling Green.
In the concrete bowling competition, WKU’s team of Joshua Wells of Harrison, Ohio, and Cory Jones of Berea finished third. Sarah Bertke of Reynolds Station finished first in technical paper.
The environmental team of Justin Eade of Bowling Green and Tyler Williams of Princeton had the simplest device and placed third in effluent quality.
The regional event was held April 23-24 in Lexington. In addition to WKU, students from University of Akron, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati State Technical & Community College, Cleveland State University, Geneva College, The Ohio State University, Ohio University, University of Pittsburgh, University of Kentucky, University of Louisville and Youngstown State University participated.
Order of the Engineer ceremony

WKU’s link (#239) of the Order was established on May 2, 2007. The Order of the Engineer was initiated in the United States to foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession, to bridge the gap between training and experience, and to present to the public a visible symbol identifying the engineer.
