Visit by former U.S. poet laureate will conclude Cultural Enhancement Series

The 2009-10 Cultural Enhancement Series at WKU concludes April 13 with a presentation by former U.S. poet laureate Billy Collins.

The event begins at 7:30 p.m. at Van Meter Hall. Admission is free and open to WKU students, faculty, staff and community members. Seating is on a first-come, first-seated basis. A book signing will follow.

Collins, who was U.S. poet laureate from 2001-03, is the inventor of a challenging and fun poetic form called the paradelle, and editor of two highly-acclaimed anthologies. His bestselling books include The Art of Drowning, Taking off Emily Dickinson’s Clothes and Sailing Around the Room: New and Selected Poems.

In January 2004, he was named New York State Poet Laureate 2004-06. Collins is a professor of English at Lehman College of the City University of New York.

Collins has been called “the class clown in the schoolhouse of contemporary poetry” (Guernica Magazine), “a sort of poet not seen since Robert Frost” (The Boston Globe) and “a poet of plenitude, irony, and Augustan grace” (The New Yorker).

His visit is co-sponsored by the Department of English.
